News 2 - Wear Red Day for the Irish Heart Foundation

St Mary's Secondary School, Baldoyle, held a 'Wear Red Day' on Friday 13th May in order to raise funds for The Irish Heart Foundation, which has sponsored Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training for all Transition Year students by supplying practice models for each student.   The “Wear Red Day” also generated significant awareness of the value of CPR and the work of the Irish Heart Foundation. The fundraising was organised by Ms. Pauline Griffin.

The Wear Red Day was a non- uniform day in which students wore something red instead of their normal uniform. The Irish Heart Foundation supplied Red T shirts for the Senior Prefects who collected the student contributions. The students made for contribution for the privilege of wearing red on the non uniform day. Overall, the excellent sum of €645 was raised, a great achievement!

Terence Flanagan, TD, opened the day in the school and congratulated the school for all its fundraising and for being involved in this vital life saving technique.

Many thanks to Ms. Griffin and to the Senior Prefects for all their efforts in fundraising for this extremely worthy cause. Many thanks to everyone who made a contribution to this most worthy cause.

Teachers - Sixth Year Students Basketball Match,

24 May on the outside Basketball Court

The annual Basketball Match between the teachers and sixth year students took place today in glorious sunshine.  The supporters were out early and the Sixth Years, led by Laura Chambers, Hayley Carton, Katie Brady, Robyn O' Sullivan, Aisling Penrose and Shannon Brady were in a very confident mood.

However, the Teachers, led by Mr. Fennell, displayed great skills and a score by Mr. Moore straight from the start paved the way.  The teachers were comfortably ahead but eased up a bit.  The Sixth Year Students sensed this and gradually got back into the game.  They drew level and very quickly they were four points ahead.  However, this spurred the teachers on which coupled with some good defending by Ms. Debbie O' Connell and centre play by Ms. Dillon and some quick scores by Mr. Roche, Ms. Ryan, Ms. Carney, Ms. Griffin and Mr. Fennell, the teachers were back in front.

Despite some good play by the Sixth Year students, the Teachers comfortably held onto their lead and increased the winning score, with a fine score by Mr. Plunkett..

It was another great win for the teachers

and they look forward to extending their unbeaten run next year.

New 8 - DATs Assessment on 3 May

Transition Year Students - Please go to Room 24

The Differential Aptitude Tests (DATs) are designed for use in educational and vocational guidance and are used by school guidance counsellors, personnel officers, psychologists and all persons concerned with assessing the intellectual characteristics and educational or vocational aptitudes of adolescents.

The rationale behind the Differential Aptitude Tests is that since different kinds of abilities are useful in different jobs and in different school subjects, a range of evaluations or tests giving measures of several abilities is likely to be more useful than a test giving a single general ability score. There are eight subtests in the DATS: Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Ability, Abstract Reasoning, Space Relations, Mechanical Reasoning, Clerical Speed and Accuracy, Spelling, and Language Usage.

Scores can be used to produce a profile showing a pupil's strengths and weaknesses. The results of these tests together with interest inventories are helpful in making careers and course choices in the future.

The results of these tests are confidential and will only be seen and used for Guidance purposes by myself.

The cost of the testing is E5, this covers the answers booklets and correction which is carried out in the Education Research Centre, Drumcondra. I intend to carry out the tests on Tuesday May 2nd. Further details of the days programme will be given to students during this week.

News 19 - Fundraising in St. Mary’s

Cats and Dogs Protection Agency

Mr. Fennell’s, Third Year CSPE Class, St. Anne ‘s, from St. Mary’s Secondary School, Baldoyle recently organised a fundraising event for the Cats and Dogs Protection Agency (CDPA).

Mary Gormley from the CDPA came out to talk to the class about the work of the CDPA.

After the talk, the students decided to organise a cake sale to raise money for the CDPA. They raised €114 which was greatly appreciated by Mary Gormley, as the Cats and Dogs Protection Agency rely only on voluntary contributions and do not receive any government funding.

Mr. Fennell the class tutor said the students were excellent organising the event and making all the cakes. It was a very worthwhile event and the students expressed a caring attitude towards the cats and dogs that are being ill-treated or need homes in Ireland.

Well done St. Anne's!
