Irish Badminton Open, December 2014
Brilliant news from our Sports Department and major congratulations to our Transition Years!
As everyone knows the Transition Years were again officiating at this year’s prestigious Carlton Badminton Irish Open, which is a World Ranking Tournament.
The Badminton Ireland officials were so impressed again by the efforts of our students and staff that they felt that the school was deserving of an award to recognise the contribution made by St Mary’s to Badminton over the years.
So on last Friday night at their Annual Awards Ceremony in the Hilton Hotel, Charlemont Place, and hosted by RTE’s Con Murphy, the school received the award for School Of The Year, beating off stiff competition from other schools north and south.
The Association said St Mary’s were deserved winners of the title because of the hard work, dedication and long hours displayed by students and staff in officiating as line judges at the Open, and also due to the long standing efforts of the school in promoting the game through tournaments and player development over the years. Indeed, one of our former pupils Norma McIntyre is now currently ranked in the top 3 ladies in Ireland.
Mr Fennell and Mr Burke would like to thank all involved for all the hard work displayed by everyone over the course of the day and evening games from Wednesday to Saturday night. Our very own Mr Burke collected the award on Saturday night at the association’s annual presentation ceremony, where two students, Lauren Cullen and Shauna Caffrey were also singled out for special praise.
Once again, congratulations to all involved and we are very proud of all the students and no doubt next year’s Transition Year students will be just as successful. Already looking forward to next year’s tournament.
