Lions Club Project, 2013
Transition year students of St. Marys Secondary school were invited to participate in the Lions Club Project as part of Intel Ireland. The 'Intel Youth Enterprise Programme’ in partnership with the Lions Club Ireland was launched by Brendan Cannon, Director of Corporate Affairs, Intel Ireland.
This programme was made up of a 2 day training camp to educate and train transition year students in the art of imagination, entrepreneurship and customer driven innovation. The main aim of the program was to immerse transition year students in a learning experience that would improve their creative capacity and teach them how to indentify problems and build ideas into concepts and prototypes that could be further progressed and commercialised. This training Programme was designed so that it was sustainable and capable of being run by any Lions Club in Ireland or throughout the Lions Global Network. The Launch was also attended by International President of the Lions Club Dr Wing-Kun Tam.
The first stage of the enterprise programme was getting their Ideation Challenge. They were given a context for this case study which was “in an area like Portmarnock and Baldoyle there are many supports, services and social outlets available for children, young people and adults. However some people can feel isolated, lonely, disconnected from either community e.g. widows, widowers, old people on their own, young people not involved in sports activities or support but cannot connect in with the services, supports that are there because they do not know about them or do not know how to link in with them. This challenge is about exploring ways that organisations and groups in Portmarnock and Baldoyle can address this issue.” They were subsequently given the title of their challenge “How to address the fragmentation and accessibility of information in a local community about services and supports that are available to respond to social problems such as isolation and loneliness”
Having been given their Ideation Challenge, Parents were then notified that the transition year students were invited to the DCU Campus for the Intel Ideation Camp which took place on April 11th and 12th from 8.30am - 3.30pm on both days.
Day One consisted mostly of registration and introductions to the programme. The day started off with the registration of the students followed swiftly by team creation and allocations of groups. The girls were split up into 9 groups of 5, where each group was given a briefing and an explanation of the case study i.e. research technologies, generate ideas and conceptualise solutions and pitch ideas to a jury. This followed a short 15 minute break at 11pm where the girls enjoyed some refreshments before they were given a 30 minute talk by Keynote speaker Jenni Timony- a successful Irish entrepreneur who has taken America buy storm with her online subscription business. The students were afterwards given a Buddy Presentation by the Inter team before breaking for lunch at 1pm - 1.30pm. Once lunch was over the girls had a 30 minute Energiser/Technology talk followed by Ideate-Introduction-Brainstorm which took place from 2pm - 3.15 before taking the bus back to St Marys.
Day Two was much more activity based. The day started off at 9.30am with 15 minutes of revising/refining the previous day. After that they had an Ideate Exercise activity followed by a Buddy Presentation once again by the Inter team. Once the 11pm break was over they engaged in a pitch activity which focused on improving their skills to effectively communicate their concepts. After lunch the girls were given the challenge of pitching their ideas to the Judges, which followed the final results and presentations.
