Transition Year Work Experience
Work experience means exactly that working in an organisation and experiencing what it is like to be part of a work environment. Transition Year students do a two week block work experience beginning Monday 11 November and ending on Friday 22 November. Students organise their own work experience. Third Year Students should begin looking for their work experience from January of Third Year.
Before you go on your work experience:
The name of the contact person
The hours of work
Any special rules that apply to the company
The time allowed for lunch break and coffee break.
During your work experience:
Report
All students compile a report on their work experience and analyse the effects the work experience had on your personal development. Some questions include
Employer Assessment Form
The Work Experience Employer also completes an assessment of the student's performance and behaviour at the end of the work experience. The assessment form details the following areas where the employer ticks various levels of performance regarding the work experience. It is quite a substantial list of skills and provides excellent feedback on the work experience.
Before you go on your work experience:
- Learn as much as you can about the company where you will be working.
- Listen carefully to the briefings from your Co-ordinator/Mentor.
- Contact the company and find out the following information:
The name of the contact person
The hours of work
Any special rules that apply to the company
The time allowed for lunch break and coffee break.
- Work out your travel arrangements
During your work experience:
- Dress appropriately for the type of work to be done.
- Always be on time for work.
- Have a positive attitude to the work experience.
- Listen carefully to the instructions given to you.
- Carry out all tasks to the best of your ability.
- Keep a daily record of the work you do, the people you meet and any problems you may encounter.
