Under 16 Division 1 Match on Friday 29 November
Away to Skerries Community School. Match tip offs at 12.30 pm. Coach Mr. Burke. All support welcome. Well done girls on a great win 42-19. Overall it was a great team performance with everyone putting their all into the game. Shannon Matthews and Chloe O' Moore were excellent in defence and their skills were well needed in a tight first quarter which ended 4 all. However, the second quarter saw Carmen Diaz lead the way for St. Marys and we ended 12-7 up. Carmen excelled in the third quarter and with strong support from Lauren Waters, Chloe O' Moore and Sorcha Gray, St. Mary's ended up leading 29 to 13 with Skerries producing a very strong finish. Skerries were a strong physical opposing side. The fourth quarter was a period of consolidation and determined play as Skerries upped their game and played some very skillful basketball. However, our players remained calm and continued playing good basketball to end the game 42-19 winners. Carmen Diaz was the top scorer for St. Mary's with 14 points. All the girls were delighted with the result particularly as it was a very strong team performance with every member contributing to the win. Thanks to Ellen Keegan, Transition Year, for reporting. St Mary's Under 16 Basketball season ended with a spirited display in the Division One on Friday against an excellent Maynooth side in Sportslink in Santry. Despite losing 28-16, the Mary's girls give a determined and committed performance, but on the day Maynooth proved to be the better side. Coaches Mr Burke and Ms Meally praised the girls, who were upgraded from Division Two last year. They also added that they hope all the players involved will continue to participate in basketball again next year and are very hopeful of further progress next year. There was a special word of thanks for Carmen Diaz who returns to her native Spain during the summer. Carmen had an excellent season and was Mary's Most Valuable Player on Friday. Overall, the girls did extremely well to reach the semi finals and we are very proud of all the effort that they had given rin eaching the Semi Final. Many thanks to Mr. Burke and Ms. Mealey for all the work that they have put into coaching the team. Thanks also to Mr. Fennell for assistance throughout the year. |
